Lesson # 5 – Guitar Chords For Beginners

When you start out playing guitar there are some basic chords that every new guitar player needs to learn if they want to have long-term success playing guitar.  These guitar chords for beginners really are essential if you ever want to learn to play songs effectively.

The basic guitar chords that I display on this page are the ones I learned when starting out and form the foundation of your guitar playing.  They are commonly referred to as guitar chords for beginners, but they are used by all guitar players, both beginner and advanced.

The challenging part of learning the chords is that it can be extremely frustrating at first as you try to memorize these.  But man you really have to learn these to the point that you can play and switch between them fluidly.

Before you go any further, however, make sure you know how to hold a guitar and how to hold a guitar pick

Open chords are usually the first thing a new guitar player learns.  They are called open chords because they contain at least one open string (strings that you play without fingering them).

These basic guitar chords are used a lot, especially on acoustic guitar. They can also be played on electric guitar but generally don’t sound as good.

And there are literally thousands of songs you can play JUST with these basic chords!

Before we continue, a little bit about guitar chord names:

  • chords are named according to letters going from A to G
  • an ‘m’ after a letter means that the chord is a minor chord
  • a ’7′ after the letter means that the chord is a dominant chord
  • a letter without ‘m’ or ’7′ means that the chord is a major chord

Also, if you need a refresher on how to read chords, you can brush up HERE.

Following is a brief video explaining basic guitar chords for beginners (I always learn better by watching) and below that is a list of basic guitar chords.
